Wrapping Up September...

 Today was Day 20!

Students are doing a nice job with coming in each day and handing in homework and getting started with their day.

Last week we finished up some reading assessments and learned about our second literacy character... Quincy, the Quizzical Questioner.

Quincy reminds that GOOD READERS ask QUESTIONS while they are reading.

We ask questions like,
  • "What do you think Sam is going to do with the scissors?"
  • "Why did the Native people move to the forest in the fall and winter?"
  • "Who are the pilgrims?"
  • "How many people were on the Mayflower?"

In MATH we are working on estimation using rounding and this week we started addition with REGROUPING! Students are doing a great job thinking about how to solve problems when there are 10 or more ONES or 10 ore more TENS.

We had our FIRST MATH WORKSHOP today and it was great. Students rotated through stations working on different skills.

Homework is more practice with adding 2 digit numbers together and deciding when trading is necessary.

Our WORD STUDY started last week with short and long /a/. We continued this week with short and long /o/. Students review their words, cut them out, sort them, and keep them for the week. During the week we do different activities with their cards such as marking vowels and consonants, alphabetizing, and using words in sentences.

We also spent some time last week working on CAPITALIZATION. What do we capitalize?  MINTS!

Students brainstormed words for each category and will keep these in their writing folder for review.

Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activity last Friday was to decide what type of column would be best to use for a house in case of flooding.

Students experimented with circular, square, and triangular columns to see which they would suggest to the engineers.

One group got their column to hold more than 40 chapter books. Ask your engineer what column works best!

SOCIAL STUDIES

We finished mapping out the different Native tribes that lived in Massachusetts. We are now focusing on the Wampanoag tribe. Students are excited to BUILD wetus tomorrow in class.

Friday is the last day of the month and we will CHANGE seats!
